Hello Fifth Grade Families!

Welcome to a new year which promises to be a great one. It will be filled with many fun moments for your children. As they take on their leadership roles here at Valley View, they will begin to imagine a world beyond elementary school. As they work hard in my classroom, they will be getting ready to head to middle school feeling positive, prepared, and polished - and fired up to accomplish big things.

As I begin my fourth year in our school district, I feel extremely fortunate to work with teachers and parents who put kids first and make sure that their learning experience is a great one EVERY DAY. My husband of six years, Joel, and my three-year-old son, Nathan, listen to my many school stories over dinner each night - it's fun to relive those moments that will shape both your children and myself for the future as we know it!

Our school day contains a balanced literacy program, tailored to meet the needs of EVERY learner. Students read to become writers and write to become more imaginative readers throughout the day. They will devolop their reading comprehension exponentially this year as they participate in year round book clubs. Our spelling program, called Words Their Way, will grow the vocabulary knowledge essential for students who are already preparing to be ready for college and careers.

In math workshop, we will continue to use our Bridges curriculum, digging deep and having problem-solving conversations about how our world works mathematically.

Along with diving into a closer study of our American history, and taking a fresh and thorough look at science through the lens of our National Geographic curriculum, students will have the opportunity to participate in JA BizTown and our Menomonee Falls DARE program with Officer Scott Holz.

Above all, my greatest goal and wish for your children is that they grow in their appreciation of one another and that they develop a great sense of self. As they head away from Valley View and onto a new adventure, the most important tool they can take with them is a great attitude. I'm looking forward to being your partner in making sure your children are successful in all they do!

Please don't hesitate to email or call me if you ever have questions or concerns! Let's make it a great year!

Sincerely,
Alyssa Schwartz
